Jacob Zelig is sent by the Polish Jews to Rome to ask the Pope to intervene in the murderous violence against them, sparked by years of blood libel propaganda.
Pope Benedict XIV hears Zelig’s plea, and sends the learned Franciscan Lorenzo Ganganelli to Poland to conduct a full investigation. Ganganelli, charged with proving or refuting the blood libel accusations once and for all, spends a year investigating all charges. He then sends the Pope an official report that bluntly dismisses the accusations against the Jews, and asks the Church to openly act against them. Ganganelli would later become Cardinal, and eventually be elevated to become Pope Clement XVI. Unfortunately, the blood libel accusations against the Jews continue to this day. |
