Birthday of Ruth Gruber, photojournalist.
By age 20 she was the youngest person in the world to obtain a PhD, and had witnessed first-hand the rise of the Nazis in Germany. She went on to become a globe-trotting American journalist, as well an advocate for Jewish refugees. Ruth personally rescued a thousand refugees from Italy during World War II and then campaigned hard to allow them to stay in the USA, as the US immigration restrictions on Jews were still in force during World War II. In 1947 Ruth was the only journalist who accompanied the Exodus deportees as the British forced them from Palestine to Germany. And she travelled to Ethiopia in the 1980s to record Israel’s rescue of the endangered Ethiopian Jewish community. The subject of a recent documentary, Ruth Gruber is still going strong. Happy Birthday, Ruth! |
