When the United Nations General Assembly debates the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the Soviet Union moves to include "Zionism, Nazism and Neo-Nazism". It is the first time that the UN sees Zionism portrayed as racism and equated with Nazism.

Earlier, the USA had introduced the motion to include anti-Semitism in the convention. The Soviets, certain that this would be used to attack their ongoing anti-Semitism and aware of the fierce resistance the proposal was raising in the Arab states, introduced their amendment as a means of blocking the American motion.

In coming years, the depiction of Zionism as Racism would pick up steam in the United Nations, backed by the Arab states and their non-aligned allies and by the Soviet Union and its own allies, leading a decade later to the despicable UN resolution equating the two.

A preposterous lie improvised to counter an American propaganda coup has grown to be a key driving truth of the Israel bashers and the New Anti-Semitism
